DIMPLE: The Multifunctional Stool

Improving upon the Ordinary

The inspiration behind the DIMPLE stool came from a desire to enhance the functionality of existing multifunctional stools. Ante International Ltd, known for their expertise in manufacturing semi-rigid felt products, aimed to create a stool that was not only practical but also visually appealing. The result is a stool that is both fun and easy to use.

The defining feature of the DIMPLE stool is its compact and light nature. Made from semi-rigid felt, it maintains its shape while providing a firm and comfortable seat. The stool's lightweight construction allows users to carry it comfortably and safely with just one hand, making it easy to move around the home.

What sets the DIMPLE stool apart is its eco-friendly design. The felt waste from production is chopped into small beans and used as filler instead of polystyrene foam beans, reducing waste and promoting sustainability. Additionally, the stool can be emptied, transforming it into a storage basket for added functionality.

The DIMPLE stool is made using a combination of pressing and injection molding techniques. A pressing tool is applied to a pre-heated felt sheet to form the stool body, while the ring handle is injection molded and secured by being screwed onto the extended part of the felt stool body. The handle is attached to the side of the stool using a magnet, allowing for easy carrying or hanging against a wall.

With dimensions of 500mm in length, 520mm in width, and 360mm in height, the DIMPLE stool is designed to fit seamlessly into any living space. Its materials include recycled PET felt for the casing, ABS for the handle, and magnets for attachment.

The DIMPLE stool's functionality is enhanced by its unique interaction features. One side of the stool is marked by a slight depression, providing an improved seating experience. Turning the stool over reveals a wider flat surface that can support a serving tray. This side can also be unzipped to remove the bag of felt beans, transforming the stool into a storage basket.

The DIMPLE stool project began in early 2015 in Hong Kong and was finalized in mid-May. The design was driven by the need for multifunctional furniture in small living spaces, a common problem in densely populated cities like Hong Kong. Through extensive research and experimentation, Ante International Ltd combined elements from various home products made out of recycled felt to create the final construction of the stool.

Overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges, the DIMPLE stool successfully achieves a simple and easy-to-use design that is eco-friendly and employs low to medium manufacturing technology. Its compact size, light weight, and multifunctionality make it a valuable addition to any home.
